FEL Wines produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris grown in the Anderson Valley and on the Sonoma Coast. Vintage

While 2013 will be remembered in the history books as California’s driest year on record to date, the heavy rains of December 2012 filled the ponds and recharged the soil allowing the 2013 vintage to proceed largely unaffected by the drought. Indeed, the 2013 growing season was nearly perfect and looks to rival the much heralded 2012 vintage. For the second consecutive year the vines set a bountiful crop that required intensive thinning to ensure even ripening and flavor development. The consistently warm summer led to an early start to harvest in vineyards around Boonville, but a cool second half of September resulted in a leisurely harvest that extended into mid-October.

Vineyards

This wine is made of a blend of Dijon 777 and Pommard clones from two different blocks at the acclaimed Hirsch Vineyard, located less than three miles from the Pacific Ocean on the Sonoma Coast.

Winemaking

The fruit was harvested September 13 at an average of 24.3° Brix. It then went through a five day cold soak at 50°F, an eight day uninoculated primary fermentation peaking at 92°F, and a fourteen day extended maceration. The wine was aged fifteen months in 60 gallon French oak barrels, 42% of which were new. Coopers include Rousseau, François Frères and Billon.

Winemaker Notes

This splendid wine is our first effort with the acclaimed fruit of Hirsch Vineyard located in the Fort Ross-Seaview region of the Sonoma Coast and is the culmination of many years of persistently asking David Hirsch for just a few tons of his Pinot Noir. The aromatics of this wine are distinctly different than our Anderson Valley Pinot Noirs, with sweet notes of strawberry, pomegranate, and cedar reflecting the vineyard’s stunning location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The palate is shaped by dense tannins and flavors of fresh red fruit, rhubarb pie, and toast. More flavors of fresh strawberry and toast punctuate the wonderfully long finish.
